Process of Woodblock Printing

Print obtained with the keyblock: outlines, frame and text.

After printing with the first colour block: red

The left hand page shows what a print with the "red colour block" looks like. It shows which parts have been left in relief.

After printing with a second colour: yellow.

The blue has already been printed using a fifth block. On the right you see the result after using a sixth block.

As in the previous examples, what you see in white on the left hand side corresponds to the places that have been carved out and therefore do not appear on the print.

A seventh woodblock has the seals embossed. The wood block used has the same dimensions as all the others.

Each subsequent print is perfectly aligned with the previous ones, thanks to the marks made on each block: the kento.

Subsequent blocks add the green, the black and the shadows. The fourteenths and last block allows to print the rain pouring down on the poor travellers.
